Lorenzo Viotti – »Newcomer of the Year« at the 2017 International Opera Awards – is making his debut at Oper Frankfurt with Massenet's Werther. When he was 25 he won the Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award, the 11th International Conducting Competition in Cadaqués and 1st Prize at the MDR Symphony Orchestra's conducting competition. He takes up the post of Chief Conductor of the Gulbenkain Orchestra in 2018/19. He was born in Switzerland and orchestras he has conducted have included the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Bamberg Symphoniker, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Munich Philharmoniker, the Philharmonische Staatsorchester in Hamburg, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, Orchestra dell’Accademia del Teatro alla Scala and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. He has also enjoyed great success at opera houses in Dresden, Stuttgart, Venice (Teatro La Fenice), Paris (Théâtre du Châtelet) and Lyon. Future engagements include five house debuts: at Zurich Oper (Werther) and the New National Theatre in Tokyo (Tosca) this season, Carmen at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Opéra National in Paris and Hamburg State Opera.
