Simon Bailey was a member of the Ensemble at Oper Frankfurt until 2014/15, and returns regularly as a guest. Last season he repeated his wonderful portrayal of Leporello in Don Giovanni, reinvented himself as the champion Boxer Adam Ochsenschwanz in the second part of a new Krenek triple bill and now he is back to sing Don Alfonso again. This British bass-baritone's many roles for the company included Peter (the father) (Hänsel und Gretel), Achilla (Giulio Cesare in Egitto), Mozart's Figaro, Gunther (Götterdämmerung), Klingsor (Parsifal), Gelone (Cesti's L’Orontea, available on CD – OehmsClassics), Don Magnifico (La Cenerentola), Bluebeard in Bluebeard's Castle and the title role in Don Giovanni. Recent engagements have included Méphistophélès (La Damnation de Faust), Kaspar (Der Freischütz), Siroco (Chabrier's L’Étoile), Figaro, Leporello and the Four Villains in Hoffmanns Erzählungen/The Tales of Hoffmann at theatres including the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, La Scala in Milan, the Theater an der Wien, Staatstheater in Stuttgart, the Oper Vlaanderen Antwerp / Ghent, Theater Basel and the Glyndebourne and Wexford festivals. Recent engagements have included Šiškov (From the House of the Dead) and Schaklowity (Khovanshchina) at Welsh National Opera and his first Jochanaan in Salome in Stuttgart, where he returns in 2018 to sing Kaspar again in Der Freischütz. Other future plans include Mayuzumi's Kinkakuiji at the Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg.
