Hedwig Fassbender's recent roles at Oper Frankfurt have included Babuschka (Der Spieler/The Gambler), the 60+ Woman/Ant (Eötvös' Der goldene Drache/The Golden Dragon), Brigitta (Korngold's Die tote Stadt/The Dead City), Mrs. Grose (The Turn of the Screw) and Gertrud (the mother, Hänsel und Gretel). This much sought after mezzo-soprano's recent engagements have included Kostelnicka (Jenůfa) in Berlin, Monte Carlo and the Staatsoper in Hannover, Mrs. Grose at Zurich Opera and in Bordeaux and Herodias (Salome) in Geneva, Brussels and Bordeaux. Conductors with whom she has worked have included Riccardo Chailly, Michail Jurowski, Kirill Petrenko, Adam Fischer, Vladimir Jurowski, Iván Fischer, Kazushi Ōno, Asher Fisch and Sebastian Weigle. She can be heard as Isolde on a recording of Tristan und Isolde (Naxos, 2005) conducted by Leif Segerstam. Hedwig Fassbender taught singing at the University of Music in Frankfurt from 1999 -2017. Her pupils, now professional singers, included Katharina Magiera, Björn Bürger, Kateryna Kasper, Ruzan Mantashyan, Maren Favela, Gurgen Baveyan and Stine Marie Fischer. She works regularly with singers at the Frankfurt and Zurich opera studios and has held masterclasses in Paris, Moscow and Warsaw. She founded, and is artistic director of, the »Exzellenz-Labor Gesang« and runs the »Lied und Lyrik« concert series at the Goethehaus in Frankfurt. Hedwig Fassbender studied piano and singing in Munich and, earlier in her career, spent time under contract in Freiburg and Basel.
