James Rutherford became even more sought after after winning the Seattle International Wagner competition. He made his debut in Frankfurt in 2014/15, singing the demanding role of Lysiart in a new production of Euryanthe, and joined the ensemble for two seasons in 2015/16. He returns to the company this season for Balstrode in the new production of Peter Grimes and Wotan in Das Rheingold. During his time in Frankfurt he thrilled audiences with the title role in a new production of Der fliegende Holländer/The Flying Dutchman, Ford in Falstaff, Herr von Faninal in Der Rosenkavalier , Mandryka - a role he has sung many times - in Arabella and enjoyed a triumph singing Wotan / Wanderer (role debuts) in Wagner's Ring. During the 2016/17 season he made two house debuts, singing Wolfram von Eschenbach in Tannhäuser at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Dutchman at the Staatsoper in Stuttgart. A former member of the Ensemble at Oper Graz, recent guest engagements have included appearances in Bayreuth, Glyndebourne, the state operas in Vienna, Hamburg and Berlin, the Netherlands Opera, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Covent Garden in London, the Lyric Opera of Chicago and San Francisco Opera singing roles such as Hans Sachs (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Amfortas (Parsifal), Wolfram (Tannhäuser), Kurwenal (Tristan und Isolde), Mandryka (Arabella), Barak (Die Frau ohne Schatten), Orest (Elektra), Jochanaan (Salome), Scarpia (Tosca), Germont (La Traviata), Jago (Otello) and the title role in Falstaff. Recent concert work has included Adams’ Nixon in China at the BBC Proms, conducted by the composer, and at the Berlin Festival. He can be heard on BIS recordings of Schubert's Schwanengesang and an album of Wagner arias.
