Elza van den Heever
The South African soprano Elza van den Heever, a former member of the ensemble at Oper Frankfurt, is one of the leading singers of her generation. Her triumphs in Frankfurt included recitals, Giorgetta in Il Tabarro when the Il Trittico production first opened, and Suor Angelica in last season's revival, Desdemona (Otello), Hélène (Les Vêpres siciliennes), Elettra (Idomeneo) - all new productions - and Elisabetta in concert performances of Maria Stuarda, a role with which she then made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 2012 (available on DVD), where she has since sung Donna Anna (Don Giovanni) and can soon be heard as Mozart's Elettra. Other recent engagements have included Ellen Orford (Peter Grimes) at the Vienna State Opera, Norma at the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, her first Leonore (Fidelio) at the Caramoor Festival, Elisabetta (Don Carlos) at the Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg and Elsa (Lohegrin) under Simone Young at Zürich Opera and at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich. Projects in 2017 include Norma at Dallas Opera, Alcina in Santa Fe and Verdi's Requiem in Bordeaux.
