Norbert Ommer studied the piano and clarinet in Cologne and music and journalism in Düsseldorf, where he graduated in film and sound engineering. He has worked in radio and television and, since 1990, regularly with (since 1997 also as a Partner) the Ensemble Modern. He has also worked with the WDR Big Band as sound engineer and, since 2002, has been closely linked to the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. He has built a name for himself as a sound designer and director – projects have included world premieres of works by Frank Zappa, Heiner Goebbels, Steve Reich, Helmut Lachenmann, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Robert Wilson at many leading international festivals including the Wien (Vienna) Modern, the Festival d’Automne à Paris, Ruhrtriennale, Holland Festival, Salzburg Festival, BBC Proms, the Donaueschinger Musiktage, Montreux Jazz Festival, Edinburgh International Festival, Lincoln Center Festival and the North Sea Jazz Festival in Amsterdam. Norbert Ommer was awarded the 2002 Golden Bobby from the Verband Deutscher Tonmeister (German association of sound mixers) and, in 2004, with the Ensemble Modern, an Echo Klassik. He has been working as a professor at the International Ensemble Modern Akademie and the HfMDK in Frankfurt since 2003 and has run seminars in sound design with the Tokyo Wonder Site and Klangspuren in Schwaz since 2005
