Vincent Callara was born in Pennsylvania and studied in Berlin with Willy Schmidt and Achim Freyer. After working as an assistant at the Kammerspiele in Munich he worked at the Schauspielhaus in Bochum, with directors including Matthias Langhoff, Manfred Karge, Claus Peymann and Alfred Kirchner. This was followed by designing sets at the Staatstheater in Stuttgart for productions directed by Peter Palitzsch and work at the Burgtheater and Akademietheater in Vienna. He also spent time working in Zurich, Geneva, Cologne Bremen and Schwerin. He was leader of set and costume design at the Schilller Theatre in Berlin from 1990 - 1993, where he worked again with Alfred Kirchner, and others. This was followed by productions in Bonn, Bremen, Augsburg, Weimar and the Berlin Ensemble directed by Valentin Jeker, Christof Loy, Tobias Richter, Katja Paryla, Fritz Marquart and others. Vincent Callara died in Berlin, at the age of only 49, not long after he had finished working on this production of Zauberflöte at Oper Frankfurt.
