Harry Kupfer has been one of Germany's most successful and admired directors for many years. He is a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts, Hamburg Free Academy of Arts and Academy of Arts in Dresden. He has directed more than 200 productions at leading theatres around the world including those in Dresden, Stuttgart, Munich, Hamburg, Vienna, Salzburg, London, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Moscow, Tokyo and San Francisco. He created a new production of Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier for the 2014 Salzburg Festival, which then went to La Scala Milan. Here is another chance to see his production of Berlioz' Fausts Verdamnis / Damnation of Faust at Oper Frankfurt, where he has also directed Prokofiev's The Gambler, Pfitzner's Palestrina (available on CD – OehmsClassics) and Glinka' Iwan Sussanin. Other new productions in recent seasons have included Lady Macbeth von Mtsensk at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Fidelio at the Staatsoper Berlin, Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny / The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny at the Semperoper in Dresden, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at Zurich Opera and Tannhäuser at the Hamburg State Opera. In 2018 he returned to the Staatsoper Berlin for Macbeth and recently directed Handel's Poro at the Komische Oper Berlin, where he was Chief Director from 1981-2002. His productions of Der fliegende Holländer / The Flying Dutchman (1978) and Der Ring des Nibelungen (1988) in Bayreuth were talked about all over the world. He was awarded the Große Bundes Verdienst Kreuze with Star by the Bundesrepublik of Germany.
