Patrick Bannwart, who has been working closely with the director David Bösch since 2004, designed the sets for his productions of Humperdinck's Königskinder and Der fliegende Holländer/The Flying Dutchman at Oper Frankfurt and for Verdi's Il trovatore at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, a co-production which will open Frankfurt's 2017/18 season. They have created many productions in Essen, Bochum, the Thalia Theater in Hamburg, the Salzburg Festival, the Schauspielhaus in Zürich, Burgtheater in Vienna, the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich and Nationale Opera in Amsterdam. He will be working at the Semperoper Dresden for the first time next season. He is also in demand as an illustrator – he designed the covers of the Die Deutsche Bühne magazine in 2013 and published a series of pictures of Kantinenhelden (cantine heroes). Patrick Bannwart was taught by Erich Wonder at the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Vienna.
