Oper Frankfurt

Special Events

Quast plays Offenbach - Opera for all - Opera for Families - Backstage Tours

QUAST plays Offenbach

Michael Quast, cabarettist, singer and musician alone on the stage apart from a table, chair, piano and accompanist is able to give the audience the impression that they are experiencing a fully staged operetta with a full cast of soloists, chorus and orchestra. If you do not speak German (but maybe it would be a good idea to read about the stories in advance) you will still enjoy every minute. These evenings are extremely popular and tickets sell like hot cakes.

Opera Finale 2011

This year's Opera Finale is linked to the new production of Aulis Sallinen's KULLERVO

This is the fourth „Opera Finale“, a series which takes the last new production of the season as the theme for special events linked to the work and its composer. The first three were Beethoven’s Fidelio, Pfitzner’s Palestrina and Berlioz’ Damnation of Faust. This season it is Kullervo by Aulis Sallinen.

Oper Frankfurt takes a close look at Kalevala, Finnish national literature and epic poetry. Unlike the Edda, Nibelungenlied, Iliad, Odyssey, Beowulf and the Song of Roland, Kalevala only came into being at the beginning of the 19th century: Eliat Lönnrot collected many songs which, previously, had only been passed on by word of mouth. Convinced that he was dealing with scattered fragments of a whole he decided to put them back together again. Although his assumption has in the meantime been proved wrong (Lönnrot had also reworked and enhanced large passages) the power of Kalevala remains: it is the foundation of present day Finnish culture and the inspiration for many fine arts, music and literature.

The special role which the Kalevala plays in Finland’s culture, and myths from other lands, will be taken up in concerts, recitals, recitations, talks, exhibitions and discussions. The public will have to chance to learn more about Aulis Sallinen and his works. The composer will be coming to the first night of this new production.
