Frank van Aken’s roles during Oper Frankfurt’s 2012/13 season are Alexej in a new production of Prokofiev’s Der Spieler/The Gambler, Fürst Wassili Golizyn in Mussorgsky’s Chowanschtschina, Siegmund in Die Walküre and Otello. Future engagements include Tannhäuser in Santiago de Chile, Erik in The Flying Dutchman at the Berlin Staatsoper, Tristan at the Staatsoper in Dresden and Siegmund at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. The first theatre to engage this Dutch tenor as a member of their ensemble was the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf/Duisburg (1997-2000). Since joining the ensemble in Frankfurt in 2006/07 his roles have included Hans (Die verkaufte Braut/The Bartered Bride), Hermann (Pique Dame), Laca (Jenufa), Tannhäuser, Luigi (Il trittico), Ägisth (Elektra), Edmund (Reimann’s Lear), Novagerio (Pfitzner’s Palestrina), Einsiedel (Hartmann’s Simplicius Simplicissimus), the Hunter (Sallinen’s Kullervo), Tristan and Parsifal. The success he enjoyed here as Siegfried (alongside his wife Eva-Maria Westbroek as Sieglinde) in the first run of performances of the new Walküre in Frankfurt (available on CD/OehmsClassics) led to him being engaged for the same role at La Scala Milan and, at short notice, the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Other guest engagements have taken him to the Nederlandse Reisopera in Enschede, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Stuttgart, Bayreuth, Baden-Baden, the Vienna State Opera, Komische Oper in Berlin, Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich and Oper Graz.
