Franz Mayer had been a member of the ensemble at Oper Frankfurt since 1977. His roles here during the 2013/14 season are Fabrizio Vingradito in a new production of Die diebische Elster/The Thieving Magpie, one of 4 Kings/ Pollux' Nephew in concert performances of Richard Strauss' Die Liebe der Danae/The Love of Danae, Sire de Béthune (Die Sizilianische Vesper/The Sicilian Vespers), the Speaker (Die Zauberflöte), Reinmar von Zweter (Tannhäuser), the Sacristan (Tosca), Le Bailli, Charlotte's Father (Werther) and Jake Wallace (La fanciulla del West). This Austrian bass baritone's roles for the company over the years have included Mozart's Figaro, Leporello / Masetto (Don Giovanni), Papageno, and Don Alfonso (Cosí fan tutte), Wagner's Fritz Kothner / Night Watchman (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Angelo (Das Liebesverbot/The Ban on Love), Puccini's Sacristan (Tosca), Schaunard (La Bohème) and Onkel Bonzo (Madame Butterfly), Verdi's Monterone (Rigoletto), Barone Douphol (La Traviata) and Montano (Otello), the Music Teacher in Ariadne auf Naxos, Trombonok in Rossini's Die Reise nach Reims/Il viaggio a Reims, Don Fernando in Fidelio, the Archbishop of Prague in Pfitzner's Palestrina, Unto in Sallinen's Kullervo and the Leader of the Councillilors in Humperdinck's Königskinder - available on CD - OehmsClassics. Franz Mayer is passionate about concert work and has sung works by Bach, Händel, Mahler, Mozart and Mendelssohn in Vienna, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Munich, twice in South America and in Japan. Guest engagements have included the roles of Fra Melitone (Forza del Destino), Paolo (Simon Boccanegra) and the Herald (Lohengrin). He was named Kammersänger by Oper Frankfurt in 1993.
