Magnús Baldvinsson, a bass from Iceland, has been a member of the Ensemble at Oper Frankfurt since 1999. Highlightts during his time with the company have included many Verdi roles, among them Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Conte di Walter (Luisa Miller), Ferrando (Il trovatore), Zaccaria (Nabucco), Banquo (Macbeth), Ramphis (Aida, in concert), The Grand Inquisitor (Don Carlo, 2010 revival) and Massimiliano/Moser (Die Räuber/I Masnadieri, 2011). He has also been cast in operas by Wagner and Mozart, including Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), Leporello (Don Giovanni) and Fafner (Das Rheingold and Siegfried) in Frankfurt’s new Ring des Nibelungen. During the 2011/12 season Magnús Baldvinsson’s roles include Ludovico in Otello and the Prince of Bouillon in Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur (both new productions) and The Commendatore (Don Giovanni). He will also be appearing as Prince Nikolaj Bolkonski/General Belliard (Prokofiev’s War and Peace) in Cologne. Other guest engagements hvae included the title role in Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’s Paulus with the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra, Tristan und Isolde with the NHK Symphony Orchestrs in Tokyo, Tannhäuser at the Semperoper in Dresden, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and Dikoj in Katja Kabanová (a role he has also sung in Frankfurt) at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon (house debut) in 2011, conductred by Julia Jones.
