LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST BACK NEXT SEASON

Puccini in the Gold Rush

When Puccini (1858-1924) was in New York in 1907 to see the first performances of his Manon Lescaut and Madama Butterfly at the Metropolitan Opera he saw David Belasco's play The Girl of the Golden West (1905) and his infallible instinct for theatre inspired him to set the work to music. The world premiere of La fanciulla del West took place at the Met in 1910, conducted Arturo Toscanini, and was a huge success. Minnie, owner of the Polka Saloon, is the most popular person in the gold miners' camp. She spurns Sheriff Jack Rance's advances because she only has eyes for a stranger... which is going to lead to trouble...

This is new ground for General Music Director Sebastian Weigle, who is better known for his marvellous interpretations of works by Wagner and Strauss. Bernd Loebe had already seen this Loy production in Stockholm when Richard Jones withdrew from the project and so did not hesitate to snap it up. After it opened in Sweden on December 17th 2011 German critics wrote that they could not imagine it being done better. The internationally sought after Dutch soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek, whose most recent role in Frankfurt was Sieglinde in Wagner's Die Walküre, is back for the title role. Also well known to audiences here are the Uruguayan tenor Carlo Ventre (Dick Johnson) and British baritone Ashley Holland (Jack Rance). Ventre's recent roles for the company include Verdi's Otello (2011) and Holland's, an extraordinary portrayal of the title role in the world premiere of Detlef Glanert's Caligula (2006). The rest of the large cast is sung by members of Oper Frankfurt's Ensemble and a few guests.
