- Cast Changes
The second, and now standard, version of Ariadne auf Naxos by Richard Strauss (1864-1949) and his librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal, was a great success when it was performed for the first time at the royal court opera in Vienna in 1916. The work has not been seen on stage in Frankfurt since Peter Mussbach's production in 1989/90.
Conductor is Frankfurt's General Music Director Sebastian Weigle. It is directed by Brigitte Fassbaender who has been directing opera since the 1990s and was the very successful Intendantin in Innsbruck for many years after enjoying a long and extremely successful career as one of the world's best loved singers. This is a dream cast: Camilla Nylund, Michael König and Franz Grundheber, returning to Oper Frankfurt to sing Ariadne, Bacchus and the Music Teacher, are joined by members of the ensemble led by Brenda Rae (Zerbinetta) and Claudia Mahnke (the Composer) and the British actor William Relton as the Major Domo (Haushofmeister) a role he recently sang in Glyndebourne.
Further Performances: December 20th, 26th 2013, January 1st (6pm!!) & 4th 2014.
Unless otherwise stated, all performances begin at 7.30pm
