In Italy alone – sings Don Giovanni's servant Leporello in his well known catalogue aria – his master's conquests number 1003. And this number is expected to rise now that Don Giovanni has escaped, unrecognised, after killing the Commendatore, father of his latest victim, Donna Anna...
Mozart's Don Giovanni quickly established a firm and prominent place in the repertoire of opera houses all over the world after it was performed for the first time on October 29th 1787 in Prague. Lorenzo Da Ponte's libretto is based on the old Spanish legend of Don Juan Tenorino, a figure who inspired a vast number of artistic works– for the stage, in literature and the fine arts.
The rest of the cast is stunning - with Juanita Lascarro (Donna Elvira), Brenda Rae (singing her first Donna Anna), Martin Mitterrutzner (Don Ottavio), Simon Bailey (Leporello) and Björn Bürger (Masetto) - all members of the Ensemble - the Italian soprano Grazia Doronzio (Zerlina), who recently enjoyed great success here as Nannetta in the new production of Falstaff and British bass Robert Lloyd, making his debut at Oper Frankfurt, is the Commendatore. On June 27th Donna Anna will be sung by Hibla Gerzmava. GMD Sebastian Weigle has enjoyed a triumph conducting his first Don Giovanni. The last three performances are conducted by two of our Kapellmeisters: Karsten Januschke (June 1st) and Sebastian Zierer (June 21st & 27th).
This new production replaces Peter Mussbach's staging, which opened in 1994. It was seen about eighty times before the last performance in 2011.
Last two Performance this season: June 27th 2014, which begins at 7pm.
