Erik Nielsen's latest project in Frankfurt was the 2012 new production of Handel's Giulio Cesare in Egitto, which he conducts again when it is revived in the spring of 2016. This season he took up the post of Chief Conductor of the Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonika and he has been appointed Music Director of Theater Basel from 2016. His wide and varied repertoire includes modern and contemporary works, alongside classics such as Die Zauberflöte, Carmen, La forza del destino. He recently conducted the world premiere of Dai Fujikura's Solaris in Paris, Lille and Lausanne and André Tchaikowsky's Der Kaufmann von Venedig/The Merchant of Venice at the Bregenz Festival. Other recent engagements have included The Rake’s Progress in Budapest, Peter Grimes in Zurich, Henze's Wir erreichen den Fluss/We Come to the River in Dresden, Korngold's Die tote Stadt in Bilbao and Frankfurt and Reimann's Lear in Malmö. During his time as a Kapellmeister at Oper Frankfurt guest engagements included projects at English National Opera in London, the Boston Lyric Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. His triumphs in Frankfurt have included the first ever performances in Germany of Aribert Reimann's Medea (live recording available - OehmsClassics).
