Earlier on in 2014 baritone Michael Volle sang Zurga in The Pearl Fishers and Rodrigo in Don Carlos at Zurich Opera and made his debut at the Met in New York singing Mandryka in Arabella. This summer he will sing the title role in Rossini's William Tell at the Munich Opera Festival. He is a regular guest at leading opera houses all over the world, including the Berlin and Vienna state operas, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Teatro alla Scala in Milan and the festivals in Baden Baden, Bayreuth and Salzburg (most recently Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg 2013). He studied with Josef Metternich and Rudolf Piernay and spent time as a member of the ensembles at the Nationaltheater in Mannheim, Oper Bonn, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Zurich Opera and, most recently, the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich. His repertoire includes Tchaikovsky's Eugen Onegin, Berg's Wozzeck, Mozart's Don Giovanni, Count Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), Ford (Falstaff), Amonasro (Aida), Amfortas (Parsifal), Wolfram von Eschenbach (Tannhäuser) and Barak (Die Frau ohne Schatten).Conductors with whom Michael Volle has worked have included Zubin Mehta, Seiji Ozawa, Riccardo Muti, James Levine, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Ingo Metzmacher, Helmuth Rilling, Philippe Herreweghe and Valery Gergiev. He is much sought after as a recitalist, often accompanied by the pianist Helmut Deutsch. Other engagements in recent seasons have included Brahms' Die schöne Magelone with Thomas Quasthoff at the Salzburg Festival and a recital of Lieder by Schubert, Mahler and Strauss at the 2013 Richard Strauss Festival in Garmisch Partenkirchen. Michael Volle sings Schubert's Winterreise at the Schubertiade in the summer of 2014. He was voted »Singer of the Year« by Opernwelt magazine in 2008 and a year later he won a FAUST Theatre Award for his interpretation of the title role in Wozzeck at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich. An extensive discography documents his career; it includes a recital of works by Schubert, Reutter, Wolf and Strauss with Helmut Deutsch, released by OehmsClassics in 2011, and Schubert's Winterreise with Urs Liska, released by Animato in 2013.
