Tanja Ariane Baumgartner’s roles at Oper Frankfurt during the 2012/13 season are Cornelia in a new production of Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto, the Princess of Bouillon in Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur - a role with which she enjoyed enormous success when the production first opened last season, Princess Eboli in Don Carlo, her first Fricka in Das Rheingold and Die Walküre and Ortrud in Lohengrin. This mezzo-soprano, who was under contract in Lucerne from 2002-2008, joined the ensemble at Oper Frankfurt in 2009/10. She enjoyed another triumph at the beginning of last season with the title role in Hans Neuenfels production of Othmar Schoeck’s Penthesilea. This production (with Tanja Ariane Baumgartner in the title role), voted „Production of the Year“ in 2008 by Opernwelt magazine, was purchased from Theater Basel. Other roles in Frankfurt have included Gaea in Daphne, Gora in the first performances in Germany of Reimann’s Medea (available on CD/OehmsClassics), Emilia (Verdi’s Otello), Beppe (Mascagni’s L’amico Fritz, in concert), Fenena in Nabucco, Die Amme in Die Frau ohne Schatten, Martha in Boito’s Mefistofele, the alto role in a production of Das Lied von der Erde, Giulietta (Hoffmanns Erzählungen/The Tales of Hoffmann) and Grimgerde (Die Walküre). Recent guest engagements have included the Geschwitz in Vera Nemirova’s new production of Lulu at the 2012 Salzburg Festival (debut), where she returned in 2012 for Charlotte in a new production of Zimmermann’s Soldaten), Die Frau ohne Schatten (directed by Marco Arturo Marelli) for De Vlaamse Opera in Ghent/Antwerp, Amneris in Aida and Carmen (2011/12) – both role debuts, both directed by Calixto Bieito, in Basel and, in 2012, Judith in Herzog Blaubarts Burg/Duke Bluebeard’s Castle under Kent Nagano.
