Katharina Magiera joined the Ensemble at Oper Frankfurt after appearing here regularly as a guest and a year in the Opera Studio. She starts the 2011/12 season off by singing the High Priestess in Hans Neuenfel’s production of Schoeck’s Penthesilea. Other roles this season are Caterina in Mascagni’s L’amico Fritz (in concert), Sélysette in Ariane et Barbe-Bleue (all role debuts), and Flosshilde and Schwertleite in Frankfurt’s new Ring. She also sang Schwertleite in David McVicar’s production of Walküre in Strassbourg, and can be heard as Flosshilde on the Oehms Classics CD of Frankfurt’s Rheingold. She began studying singing with Hedwig Fassbender in Frankfurt in 2003 and took part in masterclasses held by Christoph Prégardien, Ingeborg Danz and Prof. Rudolf Piernay. She received scholarships from the „Villa Musica“ des Landes Rheinland-Pfalz, the Studienstiftung of the German People, the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation »Live music now« and won the 2009 Mendelssohn Competition, which resulted in her singing in Elijah at the Alte Oper Frankfurt. Appearances in Frankfurt in recent seasons have included roles in a Monteverdi cycle in the Bockenheimer Depot, Third Lady in Die Zauberflöte, Tisbe in Cenerentola, Alisa in Lucia di Lammermoor, Marzelline in Le nozze di Figaro, Hua-Quî in Leoni’s L’oracolo (available on CD – Oehms Classics), Bradamante in Orlando furioso, the 2nd Koryphäe in Pizzetti’s Murder in the Cathedral and Unto’s Wife in Sallinen’s Kullervo (both new productions).
