Thorsten Grümbel joined the Ensemble at Oper Frankfurt in 2009/10, making his debut here as Zaccaria in Nabucco. Since then roles have included Colline (La Bohème), Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), Philipp II./A Monk (Don Carlo), Jacopo Fiesco (Simon Boccanegra), Osmin (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Frank in a new production of Die Fledermaus and Gernot in Wagner’s early opera Die Feen/The Fairies (in concert). The 2011/12 season includes tried and tested roles as well as new ones: as well as revivals of Die Fledermaus and Die Zauberflöte Thorsten Grümbel also sings Ludovico in a new production of Verdi’s Otello, Brighella in Wagner’s second opera, Das Liebesverbot/The Ban on Love (in concert), and the King of France in a revival of Reimann's Lear. After taking singing lessons from KS Viktor Lederer-Ponzer Thorsten Grümbel went on to study at the Musikhochschulen in Lübeck and Detmold. He received his first guest contracts whilst still a student, appearing at the Mecklenburg Staatstheater in Schwerin, the Stadttheater in Gießen and the opera courses at Schloss Weikersheim. In 1999 he joined the Deutschen Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf-Duisburg, where he remained as a member of the company for ten years. Whilst there he also appeared regularly as a guest artist in cities including Hannover, Essen, Aachen, Leipzig, Freiburg, Dortmund, Munich (State Opera), Prague and the Opera Festival in Savonlinna. In 2010/11 he made his debut at the Opéra Bastille in Paris as Pommersfelden in Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler.
