Alfred Kim
Tenor
The tenor Alfred Kim was born in Korea and studied in Seoul, Frankfurt and Karlsruhe. He won the 1997 Belvedere International Singing Competition in Vienna, the 1998 ARD Music Competition in Munich and, in 2002, was awarded a special prize by the Operalia Singing Competition in Paris, which was founded by Plácido Domingo. He was a member of the Kassel and Wiesbaden state theatres before he joined the Ensemble at Oper Frankfurt in 2009/10. Before joining the company he thrilled the public here as Carlo in a new production of Die Räuber/I Masnadieri. His first roles as a member of the ensemble were Ismaele in Nabucco, Rodolfo in La Bohème, Gabriele Adorno in Simon Boccanegra, the title role in Hoffmanns Erzählungen/The Tales of Hoffmann and Cavaradossi in Tosca). During the 2011/12 season his roles here include the title role in the Tales of Hoffmann and Alfredo Germont in La Traviata. He is much sought after internationally for lyric roles. Recent guest engagements have included Tosca and Cavalleria rusticana in Santiago de Chile, Tosca in Bordeaux, Idomeneo at Seoul Opera, the title role in Don Carlo at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, in Oslo and at the Vienna State Opera, where he has also sung Cavaradossi, appearances at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Teatro Municipal Rio de Janeiro and the Metropolitan Opera New York (Il trovatore). He has also sung in Turandot at the Aalto-Theater Essen and gave a concert in the Carnegie Hall New York. In July 2011 he sang Carlo in I Masnadieri in Montpellier. Guest engagements in 2012 include Il trovatore in Toulouse (house debut) and John Adams’ Nixon in China at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.
