The British bass Simon Neal made his debut at Oper Frankfurt in the 2009/10 season singing Mandryka in Arabella and returns in 2010/11 for The Tales of Hoffmann and Kurwenal in Tristan und Isolde. He has been a member of Theater Dortmund since 2006, where his many roles have included Offenbach’s Four Villains, Ford, the Herald, Jochanaan, Nick Shadow, Alfio / Tonio, Sharpless, Scarpia, Giorgio Germont, Alberich, Gunther, Escamillo, and the title roles in Rigoletto and Don Giovanni). Roles there in 2010/11 include two new productions: Il trittico (Michele and Gianni Schicchi) and Lucia di Lammermoor (Enrico), and Britten’s War Requiem. He studied at Leicester University and worked as marketing director at a successful British company until he decided to concentrate on singing. His career began in Great Britain with performances at Welsh National Opera and English National Opera. Other engagements have included Pizarro in Fidelio, Escamillo and Scarpia at the Sydney Opera House and appearances at the Opera in Zurich and the Opéra National de Paris (world premiere of Matthias Pintscher’s L’espace dernier).
