Oper Frankfurt’s new production of Richard Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen, directed by Vera Nemirova, began in May 2010 with the premiere of Das Rheingold. It was followed at the beginning of the 2010/11 season with Die Walküre and the tetralogy was completed earlier in the 2011/12 season with Siegfried and Götterdämmerung, paving the way for the first Ring cycles in Frankfurt for nearly 18 years and the first »own one« for more than a quarter of a century – Herbert Wernicke’s interpretation of the works came from the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels and so Ruth Berghaus’s production was the only complete genuine Frankfurt Ring since the end of the war.
Two complete cycles of this new production – the first spread out over two weeks, the second over ten days – will be performed in the early summer of 2012. These will also be the first revivals of Das Rheingold and Die Walküre. The singers are the same (at least in the main roles) as those who took part in the premiere series, the baton lies, naturally, in the hand of General Music Director Sebastian Weigle.
