Christof Loy
Christof Loy is one of the most sought after directors of his generation. His incredibly thought out and finely detailed productions have won him many prizes and awards. He was voted "Director of the Year" by Opernwelt magazine in 2003, 2004 and 2008 (for Così fan tutte in Frankfurt and Die Bassariden/The Bassarids in Munich). His Così fan tutte won him a 2008 "Faust" theatre prize for best operatic direction and his Tristan und Isolde at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden won a Laurence Olivier Award. A DVD of his Lulu (also at Covent Garden) was nominated for a 2011 Grammy Award. Other productions at Oper Frankfurt were Faust, La clemenza di Tito, La finta semplice, Arabella, Simon Boccanegra, Die Fledermaus, La Fanciulla del West and, last season, this production of Don Giovanni. Christof Loy also works reguarly for other companies, including the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, the Theater an der Wien, Royal Opera in Stockholm, Grand Théâtre in Geneva and the Glyndebourne, Aix-en-Provence and Salzburg festivals. His most recent productions were Falstaff at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Handel's Alcina at Zurich Opera, Bellini's La straniera at the Theater an der Wien (a co-production with Zurich Opera and the Aalto Theater in Essen) and Cherubini's Medea at the Grand Théâtre in Geneva. Future engagements include Bellini's I Capuleti e i Montecchi at Zurich Opera, Der Rosenkavalier in Stockholm, Peter Grimes at the Theater an der Wien, Jenůfa at the New National Theatre in Tokyo, Daphne at the Hamburg State Opera and Wozzeck at Oper Frankfurt.
