Anselm Weber's contract as Intendant of the Schauspielhaus in Bochum, which he took over in 2010, has recently been extended to 2020. During their 2014/15 season he directs the world premiere of Ein Mann will nach oben/A man who wants to get to the top, after a novel by Hans Fallada, Kabale und Liebe/Intrigue and Love and Der Besuch der alten Dame/The Old Lady's Visit. Before going to Bochum he enjoyed great success running the Schauspiel in Essen (2004-2010), which critics from the specialist magazine »theater pur« voted best theatre in Nordrhein-Westfalen on several occasions. Anselm Weber was also house director at Schauspielfrankfurt (under Elisabeth Schweeger) and the Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. He has directed at the Burgtheater and Volkstheater in Vienna, the Residenztheater and Kammerspiel in Munich and the Deutsche Theater Berlin. He made his operatic directing debut in 1999, with Rigoletto at the Aalto-Theater in Essen, where he later directed Lohengrin, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Der Rosenkavalier, the world premiere of Roland Schimmelpfennig's Die arabische Nacht/The Arabian Night, transformed into an opera by Christian Jost, and Siegfried. His productions at Oper Frankfurt in past seasons were Katja Kabanová, Tiefland and Die tote Stadt/The Dead City.
