Anselm Weber
Anselm Weber is Intendant of the Schauspielhaus in Bochum, where he recently directed the world premiere of Ein Mann will nach oben/A Man who wants Promotion, a play based on a novel by Hans Fallada. Projects during the 2014/15 season include Hans im Glück (world premiere) and Der Besuch der alten Dame/The Old Lady's Visit in Bochum, and a new production of Mieczysław Weinberg's Die Passagierin/The (female) Passenger in Frankfurt, where he has also directed productions of Janáček's Katja Kabanová and Korngold's Die tote Stadt/The Dead City. He enjoyed great success running the Schauspiel in Essen before moving to Bochum. Critics from the specialist magazine theater pur voted Essen best theatre in Nordrhein-Westfalen several times under his leadership (2004–2010). Earlier in his career Anselm Weber worked as house director at Schauspiel Bonn, Schauspiel Frankfurt and Schauspielhaus Hamburg. He has also directed productions at the Burgtheater and Volkstheater in Vienna, the Residenztheater and Kammerspiel in Munich and the Deutsche Theater Berlin. He directed his first opera in 1999: Rigoletto at the Aalto-Theater in Essen. Other opera productions have included Lohengrin, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Der Rosenkavalier, the world premiere of Roland Schimmelpfennig's Die arabische Nacht/Arabian Night, adapted for opera by Christian Jost, and Siegfried in Essen and Un ballo in maschera in Graz.
