Workshop Concerts with the Ensemble Modern

Louis Andriessen (* 1939) is one of the most influential Dutch composers of his generation. His works are marked by his conviction that music cannot be uncoupled from society and political context at the time of being written, or performed. Highlights of his „political“ output include his music theatre collective work Reconstruction and community campaign „Notenkraker“, which were both composed in 1969. Since the 1970s Andriessen's has concentrated increasingly on exchange with leading musicians, because musical innovation and reforms in ways of performing are one and the same to him. His music does not fit into any sort of category. It combines extremely diverse musical influences, finding means of expression in many ways and art forms (including film, theatre, opera). Other plans to celebrate the composer's 75th birthday in 2014 include events at the Washington D.C. Festival, which is focussing on his music. His De Materie will open this year's Ruhrtriennale, performed by the Ensemble Modern.
