Christian Gerhaher
Baritone
Although Lieder and concert work are central to Christian Gerhaher’s career – he and the pianist Gerold Huber have performed and recorded an incredible amount of Lieder repertoire over the last, nearly, 25 years, and this season, for example, he is Artist in Residence at the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra – he has long been much sought after for opera. Roles at Op er Frankfurt in recent seasons were Orfeo, his first Wolfram in Tannhäuser and Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus. He also stepped in at short notice to sing the Spielmann in a performance of Königskinder this October. Other recent engagements have included the title role in Henze’s Prinz von Homburg/Prince of Homburg at the Theater an der Wien, Wolfram at the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Vienna and Munich state operas and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, for which he was awarded a Laurence Olivier Award in 2011 „for outstanding achievement in opera“. He was also voted „Singer of the Year“ by Opernwelt magazine in 2010 for his portrayals of the Prince of Homburg and Wolfram in Vienna and Munich and has received many awards for his Lieder singing. Future engagements include Wolfram in Berlin, Vienna and London, the Marquis of Posa in Don Carlo at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse and Olivier in Capriccio in London.
