Celebrated the world over as one of the best Lieder singers of our times, Christian Gerhaher is also much sought after in the world of opera. He is singing the role of Don Giovanni for the first time in this new production at Oper Frankfurt, where his last role was Pelléas in Claus Guth's new Pelléas et Mélisande - both gentlemen were awarded FAUST Theatre Prizes in 2013 for this production. Christian Gerhaher's roles here in earlier seasons were Monteverdi's Orfeo, Wolfram (Tannhäuser) and Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus) - all new productions. He is singing the title role in Monteverdi's L'orfeo at the 2014 Munich Opera Festival this summer. Places where Christian Gerhaher and his pianist Gerold Huber have given outstanding recitals have included the Wigmore Hall in London, the Carnegie Hall in New York, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Musikverein in Vienna, the Schwetzing Festival, Rheingau Musik Festival, London Proms, Edinburgh, Lucerne and Salzburg festivals. In June 2014 they will be performing Wolfgang Rihm's setting of Goethe's Harzreise im Winter/Winter Journey through the Harz Mountains at the Würzburg Mozart Festival. Christian Gerhaher's achievements have earned him many accolades, including being voted »Male Singer of the Year« by Opernwelt magazine in 2010, a Laurence Olivier Award in 2011, an International Opera Award for his first arias recording in 2013 and an honorary »Nachtigall/Nightingale« award from the German Record Critics Awards in 2014. He is the Berlin Philharmonic's current »Artist in Residence« and an honorary professor at the Munich Academy of Music.
