Johannes Erath's previous productions for Oper Frankfurt were Eötvös’ Angels in America in the Bockenheimer Depot and Otello and Giulio Cesare in Egitto in the main house. He has recently directed Janáček's Das schlaue Füchslein/The Cunning Little Vixen at the Hamburg State Opera and Korngold's Die tote Stadt/The Dead City for Opera Graz. Later on in the 2014/15 season he directs Le nozze di Figaro at the Semper Opera in Dresden. Johannes Erath was awarded the 2008 Götz Friedrich Prize for his production of Massenet's Cendrillon in Bern. Other productions in recent seasons have included Lohengrin (which opens soon in Oslo), Lulu, Don Giovanni and Elektra in Graz, Eugen Onegin in Mainz, La Traviata at the Hamburg State Opera, Gerhard Schedl's Triptychon at the Neue Oper in Vienna, and Orfeo ed Euridice and Aida at Cologne Opera. Johannes Erath teaches at the Berlin University of the Arts. After studying the violin in Vienna and Freiburg, Johannes Erath began his career playing with several orchestras, including the Volksoper's in Vienna and the Vienna Philharmonic's Orchestra Academy. He began his career in opera assisting directors, including Willy Decker, Nicolas Brieger, Christine Mielitz, Guy Joosten, Peter Konwitschny and Graham Vick at theatres throughout Europe. He became director of productions at the Hamburg State Opera in 2002 and received a scholarship from the »Akademie Musiktheater heute« in 2005.
