It has been acknowledged that the American soprano Emily Magee has one of the finest voices of her generation. After making her very successful debut in Germany as Elsa in Lohengrin at the Berlin State Opera in 1996, conducted by Daniel Barenboim, she went on to sing roles from the German repertoire at important opera companies all over the world. During 2011 she sang Elsa at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, in Bucharest, Tokyo and at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich. She is regarded as one of the finest singers of roles by Strauss. The Marschallin (Der Rosenkavalier in Essen), Kaiserin/Empress (Die Frau ohne Schatten in Zurich and Tokyo), Ariadne (in Zurich), Arabella and Daphne (Hamburg) and Chrysothemis (Elektra in Zürich) where followed by her first performances of Salome, with the Berlin Philharmonic and at last year’s Easter Festival in Salzburg. Future engagements include the Kaiserin in a new production of Die Frau ohne Schatten at La Scala Milan, Salome at the Vienna State Opera, Ariadne (auf Naxos) at the Salzburg Festival, Marietta in Die tote Stadt in Bilbao and Ursula (role debut) in Mathis der Maler in Zurich.
