Alfred Kirchner’s La Boheme and Die Zauberflöte have proved very popular at Oper Frankfurt. He is also known to audiences here for many of his other productions, including Die Soldaten/The Soldiers, Eugen Onegin, Manon Lescaut and Tosca (2001/02). Recent engagements have included Don Giovanni in Magdeburg (2012 in Oviedo) and Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor/The Merry Wives of Windsor at the Volksoper in Vienna (2012 on tour in Tokyo). This director began his career as an actor. He assisted Peter Zadek at the Bremer Theater from 1964-1971. This was followed by many of his own productions in Stuttgart and Bochum. Between 1989 & 1993 Alfred Kirchner was a member of the Direktorium of Germany’s Schauspielbühnen (straight theatres) Berlin. He directed Wagner’s Ring in Bayreuth from 1994-1998. Other productions have included Lohengrin at Den Norske Opera in Oslo, Lachenmann’s Das Mädchen mit den Schwefelhölzern/The Little Match Girl at the Festwochen in Vienna, Donizetti’s Viva la Mamma! – Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali at the Semperoper in Dresden and Aida in Freiburg. Alfred Kirchner is also very interested in contempory theatre and opera and has directed world premieres (and works that have not been performed in this country before) of works by Martin Walser, Peter Turrini, Heiner Müller, Herbert Achternbusch, Dario Fo, Maxim Gorkina and Hans Zender.
