Alfred Kirchner
Alfred Kirchner is known to audiences in Frankfurt for his productions here, which include Die Soldaten, Eugen Onegin, Manon Lescaut, Tosca and La Bohème. Recent productions elsewhere include Don Giovanni in Magdeburg and Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor/The Merry Wives of Windsor at the Volksoper in Vienna (2012 tour in Tokyo). He began his career as an actor. Between 1964 and 1971 he assisted Peter Zadek at the Bremer Theater. This was followed by many of his own productions in Stuttgart and Bochum. Between 1989 and 1993 Alfred Kirchner was a member of the Direktorium der Staatlichen Schauspielbühnen in Berlin. From 1994 - 1998 he directed Wagner's Ring in Bayreuth. Other engagements have included productions for the Norske Opera in Oslo (Lohengrin), the Festwochen in Vienna (Das Mädchen mit den Schwefelhölzern/The Little Matchstick Girl), the Semperoper in Dresden (Viva la Mamma! – Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali) and Freiburg (Aida). Alfred Kirchner has been involved in world premieres and first performances by Martin Walser, Peter Turrini, Heiner Müller, Herbert Achternbusch, Dario Fo, Maxim Gorki and Hans Zender.
