LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST

Puccini in the Gold Rush

Giacomo Puccini's "Wild West Opera" La fanciulla del West has not been performed at Oper Frankfurt for 55 years! The Girl from the Golden West is now back in a wonderful (Stockholm Royal Opera) production by Christof Loy which opened to storms of applause on May 12th. The action takes place during the Californian Gold Rush in the mid 1850s, an unexpected subject, perhaps, for an Italian composer. Disappointed, homesick men, lured there by the dream of making their fortunes, find their solace in a saloon run by Minnie, sung by Eva-Maria Westbroek (see photo).
