Giuseppe Verdi’s Masked Ball in present day Berlin – murder takes place in the seat of political power in Claus Guth’s production. Similar to Eugène Scribe’s original, Giuseppe Verdi and his librettist Antonio Somma first set the opera in late 18th century Sweden, describing a tragedy in the highest circles. A censor in Naples refused to allow the murder of a king to take place on stage. The setting was changed to North America and King Gustav III of Sweden became Riccardo, the Governor of Boston. Verdi’s opera tells a story based on an historical event which took place only forty years before the world premiere. Attempts on the lives of leaders of state today make it all the more relevant. Or, as Hans-Klaus Jungheinrich wrote in 2005 after this production opened: »When something very amusing suddenly turns into something eerie then the drama becomes even more intense and frightening.«
