Daveda Karanas
Mezzo-soprano
Daveda Karanas is making her debut in Germany with these performances of Khovanshchina at Oper Frankfurt. Another highlight this season is Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde at the Canadian Opera Company directed by Peter Sellars. She has also been engaged to cover Cassandre in Les Troyens at the Metropolitan Opera New York. In future seasons this Greek-American mezzo-soprano, who caused a sensation in 2012 when she sang Judit in Bluebeard’s Castle at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and Amneris in Aida at Arizona Opera and the Vancouver Opera, will be singing lead roles at San Francisco Opera, Vancouver Opera, Seattle Opera, the Lyric Opera of Chicago and Zurich Opera. She was engaged to cover the role of Judit at the Saito Kinen Festival in Japan and a tour of China, conducted by Seiji Ozawa. Daveda Karanas is an Adler Fellow of San Francisco Opera, where she has sung Suzuki in Madame Butterfly, amongst others, and took part in a complete Ring cycle for the first time (2010/11: Waltraute, 2nd Norn and Fricka cover). Successes in competition have included winning the 2008 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and the 2006 Marilyn Horne Foundation Competition (Encouragement Award).
