Pier Giorgio Morandi is a regular guest at Oper Frankfurt, where operas he has conducted have included Simon Boccanegra, Madame Butterfly, Boito's Mefistofele Macbeth and, most recently, Otello and La fanciulla del West. Other recent engagements have included Manon Lescaut in Tokyo, Maria Stuarda in Stockholm and La Bohème in Palermo. Future plans include La traviata in Strasbourg, Falstaff in Copenhagen and Rigoletto at the Opéra Bastille in Paris. He is First Guest Conductor of the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra. After studying with Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa, and assisting Riccardo Muti and Giuseppe Patané at La Scala Milan, he was appointed Chief Conductor of Rome Opera in 1989. This was followed by periods as First Guest Conductor of the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest and the Royal Opera in Stockholm. Other important engagements have taken him to theatres including the Vienna State Opera, Zurich Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Semperoper in Dresden and the Arena di Verona.
