Pier Giorgio Morandi
Pier Giorgio Morandi has built up an impressive repertoire of Italian operas since he began his career at La Scala Milan. After studying with Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa he became vice chief conductor at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome in 1989 – the start of an extremely successful international career. He has appeared in Frankfurt many times in the past conducting Tosca (2003), Madame Butterfly and Boito’s Mefistofele (2004), Verdi’s Macbeth (2006), La Traviata (2007), concert performances of Norma (2008) and Simon Boccanegra in 2011. He is Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Opera in Stockholm, where he will soon be conducting Un ballo in maschera. He recently conducted L’elisir d’amore, La Bohème and Don Carlo in Dresden. Other highlights in recent seasons have included engagements at the Vienna State Opera, Zurich Opera, in Copenhagen, Göteborg and Oslo, at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Arena di Verona, in Seoul and Tokyo. Orchestras with whom he has appeared in concert in the recent past have included the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, London Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestra. Many productions conducted by Morandi are available on CD and DVD.
