Guillaume Bernardi

Guillaume Bernardi
Guillaume Bernardi directed Haydn’s L’isola disabitata (2002/03), Marc Neikrug’s Through Roses (2005/06) and Francisco Antonio de Almeida’s oratoro La Giuditta (2009/10 – the first time the work had ever been staged) for Oper Frankfurt in the Bockenheimer Depot. He directed this production of Die Hochzeit des Figaro/Le nozze di Figaro/The Marriage of Figaro in the main house in 2006/07. This Canadian artist, who teaches at York University in Toronto, studied French and Italian literature at the Sorbonne in Paris. He directed a few plays in Canada which were praised for the innovative way he dealt with text and body movements (including Bas Relief, which was nominated for two Dora Awards for Best Choreography and Production). Operas on which he has collaborated with the choreograper Trisha Brown and conductor René Jacobs have included Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo in Brussels, London, Paris and Aix-en-Provence and Sciarrino’s Luci mie traditrici. These were followed by, again with Jacobs, a semi-staged production of Handel’s Saul in Brussels in 2001, the baroque opera Dal male il bene by Antonio Maria Abbatini and Marco Marazzoli at the Festwochen in Innsbruck, Handel’s Belshazzar in Brussels in 2002/03 and Le nozze di Figaro for the Canadian Opera Company in 2007.
