Harry Kupfer
Harry Kupfer is one of Germany's leading directors. He is a member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin, the Free Academy of Arts in Hamburg and the Sächsische Academy of Arts in Dresden. He has directed more than 200 productions at theatres all over the world, including those in Dresden, Stuttgart, Munich, Hamburg, Vienna, Salzburg, London, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Moscow, Tokyo and San Francisco. He directed Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier at the 2014 Salzburg Festival – a production which can be seen this season at La Scala Milan. His productions at Oper Frankfurt in recent seasons were: Prokofiev's Der Spieler/The Gambler, Berlioz' Fausts Verdammnis/Damnation of Faust and Pfitzner's Palestrina (available on CD - OehmsClassics). Other recent new productions have included Weill's Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny at the Semperoper in Dresden, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at Zurich Opera and Tannhäuser at the Hamburg State Opera. His productions of Der fliegende Holländer (1978) and Der Ring des Nibelungen (1988) at the Bayreuth Festival were talked about all over the world. Harry Kupfer was Chief Director of the Komische Oper in Berlin from 1981 - 2002. He was awarded the Großen Bundesverdienst Kreuzes (cross) with Star – for his services to Germany.
