The Hungarian bass Bálint Szabó, who is singing the role of the King in Weber's Euryanthe for the first time, was under contract to the Hungarian and Romanian state operas before he joined the ensemble at Oper Frankfurt in 2005/06, for four seasons. During his time with the company his roles included Don Giovanni, Méphisto (Gounod's Faust), Fiesco (Simon Boccanegra; which he sings again here in a revival which opens on April 24th), Banco (Macbeth), Zaccaria (Nabucco), Don Profondo (Il viaggio a Reims), Raimondo (Lucia di Lammermoor) and Philipp II (Don Carlo). He recently sang Publio (La clemenza di Tito) at the Opéra National de Paris, Strommiger (La Wally) at the Grand Théâtre in Geneva and Wurm (Luisa Miller) at the Théâtre Royal in Liège. Other engagements in recent seasons have included appearances at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the Bayerischen Staatsoper in Munich, Stuttgart Opera, the National Opera in Athens, Covent Garden in London, La Scala Milan, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse, Teatro Municipal Santiago de Chile and the New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv.
