Was born in Frankfurt, where he went to school, studied piano at the Conservatoire and medicine for two years at the University Clinic (Universitätsklinikum).
His love of music, and need to make music triumphed in 1986: he stopped training in medicine, went to study the piano in Munich and at the Conservatoire in Moscow, won many awards, helped by his scholarships from the DAAD and German Study Foundation, at competitions in Italy, Spain, Italiy, South Africa, building the base for an international career.
Jan Philip Schulze is now one of the most interesting and sought after chamber musicians and Lieder accompanists. Artists with whom he has performed include Juliane Banse, Annette Dasch, Rachel Harnisch, Dietrich Henschel, Jonas Kaufmann, Johan Reuter, Robert Dean Smith and Violeta Urmana in London, Vienna, Tokyo, La Scala Milan and the opera houses in Toulouse, Brussels, Paris, Barcelona and at the Edinburgh, Luzern, Munich, Salzburg and Schwarzenberg festivals.
Equally passionate about contemporary and classical music, he made his debut with the Munich Philharmonic playing the world premiere of Christoph Staude’s piano concerto. He played Hans Werner Henze’s complete output for piano, at the composer’s suggestion, in Madrid, Genoa, Rome, at La Scala Milan and the Alte Oper in Frankfurt and performed many world premieres of works by composers including Hans Werner Henze, Wolfgang Rihm, Dieter Schnebel, Johannes Schöllhorn, Jörg Widmann and Beat Furrer.
Jan Philip Schulze is Professor for Lieder at the Musikhochschule in Hannover.
