David McVicar's production of Don Carlo has drawn audiences like a magnet since it first opened in 2007/08. This artist, who was born in Scotland, is one of the leading directors of his generation. His productions can be seen at all leading opera houses in Europe, the USA and Australia, and many have been shown on television and recorded on DVD (among the most recent are: Andrea Chénier, Les Troyens, Faust, Le nozze di Figaro, Die Zauberflöte, Rigoletto and Salome at the ROH Covent Garden, Carmen and Giulio Cesare at Glyndebourne and Manon at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona). David McVicar works regularly at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where his productions of of Il trovatore, Anna Bolena, Cavalleria Rusticana / Pagliacci, Maria Stuarda and a new production of Roberto Devereux can be seen this season. He also directed a new production of Berg's Wozzeck for the Chicago Lyric Opera in 2015. His production of Wagner's Ring at the Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg in 2010/11 was awarded the Grand Prix de la Musique du Syndicat de la Critique. David McVicar was awarded an Olivier Award in 2008 for his productions of The Turn of the Screw and Agrippina (which was also performed at Oper Frankfurt) and was knighted by the Queen in 2012 for his services to opera.
