Tuija Knihtila


Mezzo-soprano

The Finnish mezzo-soprano Tuija Knihtilä makes her debut at Oper Frankfurt in this revival of Tannhäuser. She was a member of the ensemble at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki until 2010. She recently sang Ortrud in Lohengrin at the 2013 Savonlinna Opera Festival 2013, where she has appeared regularly as a guest since 2004 and where she will return in 2014 for the role of the Mother in Sallinen's Kullervo. She also recently sang Amneris in Aida at the Teatro Municipial in São Paulo, a role she will be performing at Theater Bonn in 2014. Other companies where she has appeared in recent seasons include Bergen Opera, the Royal Opera in Copenhagen, the Norwegan National Opera in Oslo and the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. Her repertoire includes Brangäne (Tristan und Isolde), Waltraute / Wellgunde (Der Ring des Nibelungen), Cherubino (Le nozze di Figaro), Dorabella (Così fan tutte), The Composer (Ariadne auf Naxos), Brigitta (Die tote Stadt/The City of the Dead), Rosina (Barbiere di Siviglia), Adelaide (Arabella), Iocaste (Oedipus rex) and the title role in Carmen. Tuija Knihtilä studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and University of Arts in Berlin and began her career as a member of the International Opera Studio in Zurich.
