Walter Sutcliffe studied at the Royal College of Music and Cambridge University. He assisted on productions at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Covent Garden and the Met in New York. Walter Sutcliffe made his debut at Oper Frankfurt with a very successful production of Britten's Owen Wingrave in the Bockenheimer Depot in 2010. The production transfered to the main auditorium in January 2015, the first time this has ever happened, and was recently staged at the Théâtre du Capitole Toulouse as part of a double bill with The Turn of the Screw, also directed by Walter Sutcliffe, Last year he directed a wonderful production of Reimann's Gespenstersonate / Ghost Sonata in Frankfurt, also in the Bockenheimer Depot, and Otello at the Teatro Regio in Turin. Other new productions in recent seasons have included Le Grand Macabre in Chemnitz, La Traviata and Luisa Miller in Braunschweig, Kiss me, Kate and Werther in Magdeburg, Orpheus in der Unterwelt/Orpheus in the Underworld and Don Giovanni in Osnabrück, Carmen and Così fan tutte at Tallinn Opera, Sarka at the Dicapo Opera New York, The Knot Garden at the Klangbogen Festival in Vienna and Die Geschichte vom Soldaten/The Soldiers at Battersea Arts Centre in London. Forthcoming engagements include his return to Toulouse and Turin and Der Zwerg/The Dwarf in Chemnitz.
