Roles sung by the tenor Hans-Jürgen Schöpflin at Oper Frankfurt in recent seasons were Edmund in Aribert Reimann's Lear, Sir Philip Wingrave in Owen Wingrave, Quint in The Turn of the Screw and, last season, Johansson in Aribert Reimann's Die Gespenstersonate / Ghost Sonata. This award winning artists has established himself as one of the finest interpreters of roles in 20th and 21st century music. Places where he has performed recently have included Barcelona, the Opéra National in Paris, Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich, in Karlsruhe, Basel (world premiere of Der Sandmann/The Sandman) and the Komische Oper in Berlin. The production of Death in Venice at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, in which he sang Aschenbach, was awarded the Spanish Opera Prize for Best New Production of the Year in 2008. This is a role that won him the 2007 Theatre Oscar and the reason he was voted Best Singer by critics in Nordrhein-Westfalen. In 2012 he sang in Weill's Berlin Requiem for Netherlands Radio.
