Jonathan Lemalu
Jonathan Lemalu, who was born in Samoa and is one of the most sought after bass baritones of his generation, is making his debut at Oper Frankfurt, with the role of Fernando Villabella in this new production of Rossini's La gazza ladra. Plans have already been made for him to return for another role (debut). Roles during 2013 included Masetto in Don Giovanni in Baden Baden and Leporello (Don Giovanni) in Auckland. Jonathan Lemalu has appeared at many leading international venues including the Munich and Hamburg state operas, the Theater an der Wien, English National Opera and Covent Garden, in London, Australian Opera, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera and the Metropolitan Opera New York, the Wigmore Hall London, Carnegie Hall New York, the Edinburgh, Glyndebourne, Gergiev, Ravinia and Tanglewood festivals and BBC Proms. Orchestras with whom he has appeared have included the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Camerata Salzburg and Berlin Philharmonic. Awards include the Kathleen Ferrier Award, a London Royal Philharmonic Society award for Young Artist of the Year, two ECHO Classics and, for his debut CD of Lieder by Brahms, Schubert and Fauré, the Gramophone Magazine prize as best up and coming singer.
