Jonathan Lemalu
Jonathan Lemalu, who was born in Samoa and is one of the most sought after bass-baritones of his generation, is singing the role of Sir John Falstaff for the first time. He made his debut in Frankfurt last season, singing Fernando Villabella in the new production of Die diebische Elster/The Thieving Magpie. Recent engagements have included Masetto (Don Giovanni) in Baden-Baden and Leporello (Don Giovanni) in Auckland. Other venues where he has appeared in recent seasons have included the Munich and Hamburg state operas, the Theater an der Wien, English National Opera and Covent Garden in London, Glyndebourne, Opera Australia, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Wigmore Hall in London and Carnegie Hall in New York. He has also performed at the Edinburgh Festival and BBC Proms. Orchestras with whom he has appeared have included the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Camerata Salzburg and Berlin Philharmonic. Honours won by this artist include the Kathleen Ferrier Award, the Royal Philharmonic Society's Young Artist of the Year award and two ECHO Klassiks. His first solo CD, of Lieder by Schubert and Fauré, won him a Gramophone Magazine for best up and coming artist.
