About the work

This opera is full of heroic impulses and melancholy professions of love. After the overwhelming overture the music conjures up a world of spirits. Graf Adolar's lovesick sister Emma poisoned herself, but finds no peace in her grave. Although Weber's magic is bewitching, contradictions in the libretto led to a luke warm reception when it was first performed and, still today, the libretto is the main reason why Weber's most exciting work leads a shadowy existence in the opera world. The poet Helmina von Chézy based it on a 13th century tale set in Ludwig VI's castle. The declaration of peace is being celebrated. Graf Lysiart doubts that Euryanthe is faithful to Adolar. They make a bet, with Adolar, sure of his beloved's fidelity, putting all his worldy goods at stake. Lysiart tries to seduce Euryanthe but she spurns him. He gets unexpected help from Eglantine, Euryanthe's best friend, who is also in love with Adolar. They plot an intrigue. Euryanthe is disowned and abandoned in the woods. When she, unexpectedly, encounters the King she finds the courage to profess her innocence. The treacherous pair give themselves away, their intrigue laid bare.
Weber's first through-composed opera was written after the enormous success he enjoyed with Freischutz. In Euryanthe he discovered new harmonic directions and brought out fascinating musical character studies. Despite the libretto – the dramatic flow of music it inspired is of rare clarity and poetic beauty.
