Christof Nel
Christof Nel has worked regularly at Oper Frankfurt for many years. His productions for the company have included Der Freischütz, Falstaff, Die verkaufte Braut/The Bartered Bride, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Salome, Madame Butterfly, Die Frau ohne Schatten/The Womann without a Shadow, Parsifal, Simplicius Simplicissimus and Kullervo. Other operas he has directly, most of them in close collaboration with Martina Jochem, have included Hoffmanns Erzählungen/The Tales of Hoffmann and, most recently, Falstaff at the Staatstheater in Mannheim, Elektra at the Grand Théâtre in Geneva, Aida at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Der Rosenkavalier and Don Carlo at the Staatsoper in Hannover, Moses und Aron, La clemenza di Tito and Pelléas et Mélisande at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein and Handel's oratorio Belsazzar at the Berlin State Opera. He has also directed several world premieres, including Rolf Riehm's Das Schweigen der Sirenen/The Silence of the Sirens and Mauricio Kagel's TheaterKonzert. Christof Nel, who started out as an actor, began directing opera in Stuttgart and Frankfurt in the 1970s. His experimental projects, the Tränen des Vaterlandes/Tears of the Fatherland with the Forsythe Company for example, were widely acclaimed. Christof Nel is staging Mozart's Requiem in Gießen this summer.
