Puccini's La Bohème is a moving, not very long opera, about young artists in Paris, a painter, musician and poet, who lead a seemingly care free life, although they are very short of money. They are not very lucky in love and, it has a very sad ending...

Engelbert Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel takes us into a dark, bitterly cold forest, where the witch is waiting. It is not exactly the same as Grimm's story but is magical for grown ups and children alike.

Verdi's Simon Boccanegra is probably more suitable for older children: Simon Boccanegra, the Doge of Genova, is reunited with his long lost daughter Amelia after twenty five years. She had been brought up by his political enemies. One of them, in the never ending struggle for power between the plebeians and aristocracy, succeeds in poisoning him. Before he dies he names Amelia's intended husband as his successor.
